Actually, that's the right order of magnitude for fetching all old
headers. Just for the record: In a clean environment, as a user with no
Gnus related files at $HOME, and with an emacs without the patch,
subscribe to, and enter gmane.comp.tex.xetex like this
env NNTPSERVER=news.gmane.org emacs -Q -nw
ESC x g n u s RET
S s g m a n e . c o m p . t e x . x e t e x RET g RET RET
Gnus retrieves about 8M header data (look at the size of the " *nntpd*"
buffer).
