Here's a screenshot of sorts from my Gnus:

Please note that Giovanni is not Reiner. I clicked on Reiner's
message, and got Giovanni's. Giovanni's doesn't even show up in the
summary. This appears to be related to the whole deal with messages
marked with M's coming back after having been seen already.

(wow has CVS Gnus gone wacky lately.)

Do you use both asynchronous prefetching and the backlog or cache? I
have seen bad interaction between them some time.

I use the cache, but gnus-asynchronous is set to nil.

`gnus-keep-backlog'? Is this in nntp groups only?

This is set to "off" according to customize, with a note reading "this
option is unchanged from its standard setting.", so I don't think it's
the problem.

It's only been obvious in nntp -- haven't seen it elsewhere.

[[ Summary and article buffers do not agree. ]]

Is the overview data on the server correct? If you telnet to it and
then issue NNTP commands manually, do you see the the XOVER output
agrees with the article itself?

Hm. It seems the messages you show in the summary buffer are not
cached, because `*' is not shown in the lines. Right?

Umm, I'm not sure exactly how to do this. Is there a document online
that can walk me through it?

That is correct.

Not sure. After "telnet news-server 119" to connect to it, you can do
HELP to get an overview. The idea is that you enter a group with
"GROUP foo.bar". This tells you about the article numbers in that
group. Then you can request overview data with "XOVER 1-100" (you
will need to adjust the numbers based on the ones returned group
GROUP). I forget which command you need for showing an article, but
HELP will tell you.

FYI: My article "Re: mutt vs gnus" is about 3 months old (July, 10)
and Giovanni's is quite new. The two articles should have quite
different numbers.

  article [MessageID|Number]
  body [MessageID|Number]
  head [MessageID|Number]

When using MessageID, don't forget the brackets:

head <foo.fsf@some.fqdn>

Bye, Reiner.
