It is possible that some of the issues go away after installing Gnus 5.10, though 5.9 should not behave that badly. What happens if you press L to show all groups, then C-u RET on the INBOX group? Does that show you some articles? There are some mechanisms in Gnus that can automatically mark articles as read; not sure which one of them is in effect for you. Have you tried to use another IMAP client to see which messages are on the server? Kai
