I was able to fix the xover problem by switching to nc as you
suggested, however somehow I had to ssh to a different host and then
nc to the news server. If I tried to ssh to the news server and nc to
itself, the nntp server would say "invalid command" for every
command. I did not try the ssh+telnet approach using a different
intermediate host as for nc - maybe it would have worked too. There
is something very weird happening on that server.
Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. My newsgroups are now all back in
business.
