Apparently the corporate email server, some version of Exchange, will
talk IMAP for reading mail but only talks its proprietary protocol for
sending. Has there been any progress on this front? Various web
searches sound optimistic...

I've only used SMTP for mail delivery to an Exchange server. Since all
mail admins I've bothered about it have been nice enough to enable it,
it never was a problem. Is that not an option for you? I'm wary of any
Exchange work, that thing is nasty...
