Ahh, but I found that it wasn't as hard as I thought. Here's what
I've been doing in my .gnus.el and .emacs files:
1) hover on a setq or add-hook variable
2) hit ^H v RET
3) if the help buffer contains "customize", select it
4) select "save customized value" if it isn't the default
5) delete the setq
6) go on to the next one
That's already cleaned up a significant portion of my config files. Cool.
