`M-u' works for me; with a prefix it will mark that many articles as
unread.

You can always use `B r' to respool an individual article.  The Gnus
registry could be used to notice new articles (it already grabs them for
its own use) and then you could respool each noticed article.  Would
that work for you?  FWIW, I would make this an interactive command, not
something that happens by default every time you enter a group.
