to see messages marked with a tick (!) in a group, I enter the group and
hit x which is bound to:
gnus-summary-limit-to-unread
I see I could also use: / u, or the menu <menu-bar> <Gnus> <Limit to>
<Unread>, the latter which you imply is not working for you.
