A minor point, If there is nothing to fetch, then perhaps don't try to
open the gnus-select-method server.
I.e, if one has unsubscribed all nntp groups and set
gnus-check-new-newsgroups 'nil
as I do in http://jidanni.org/comp/configuration/.gnus.el ,
then there is no point in trying anyway and giving
nntp (news.gmane.org) open error: ''. Continue? (y or n)
if one can't connect.
