More digging on nnml expiry problems

I've tried to debug the expiry problems and I've gotten this far: for all
the potentially expirable articles,

   (gnus-data-find article))

returns false. The gnus-data-find macro in turn is doing some sort of
interrogation of the gnus-newsgroup-data local variable. Can anyone possibly
explain why?

Is there an elisp function that I can use that will recursively dump that
local variable? (I'm having trouble inspecting it.)

Why it always returns false, I mean, not why it interrogates the local
variable :-)
