The above was a bit of an anomalous, misleading, and in the
end kind of dumb posting. The answer has to do with group
levels. Somehow my INBOX changed from level 1 to level 3,
something it took a while to tumble to. "S l 1" and all is now
well.

Ah, gnus ... love it, hate it, can't live without it.
