This is descibed in the manual here: http://gnus.org/manual/gnus_178.html ("imap"). This way I don't have to interact much with the IMAP-server; it works fine for me. (If you need to use other clients once in a while, this may not be a good solution, I just thought I'd mention it as a way to live with Microsoft Exchange).
