That could perhaps work, > but I don't know how to implement it. Probably that is indeed what I was asking for. GNU Emacs indeed seems to know how to guess encoding when a file is visited. The 1g command suggested by you (and Kai, thanks) helps, but presumes I know the encoding before switching. As time permits, I'll have a look at the "builtin AI". Thank you.
