Yes, the answer is "replace it with nothing" :) If you're okay with the IMAP search syntax, then you're done. If you'd like to use a different "key:value" style of syntax, which I at least find more intuitive, then you can set `gnus-search-use-parsed-queries' to t, and read the "Search Queries" section of the manual.
