When I had it mostly working, I discovered that I didn't need to specify (nnir-search-engine notmuch) in the select method if I specified it as a default: (setq nnir-method-default-engines '((nnimap . imap) (nntp . gmane) (nnml = . notmuch))) So, in fact, I've gone back to mostly where I started with the additional default and everything seems to be working fine.
