Emacs 23? Emacs from Bazaar is 24.x. Can you do `M-x emacs-version'?

Yeah, something is wrong with your setup. Maybe someone else knows, I
can't see the problem if you're really using the trunk Emacs and Gnus.
The exact same setup works for me.
