Gnus doesn't like charset=utf8

Evolution marks up utf-8, like this:
 Content-type: text/plain; charset=utf8
and Gnus doesn't recognize this as utf-8.

RFC3626[1] lists says, in section 8:
 The charset parameter value is "UTF-8".

IANA[2] doesn't list any aliases for utf-8.

I've filed a bug report on evolution[3], but it would still be nice to
have Gnus work nicely with the Evolutions already out there.

Please tell the user to report it as a bug in Evolution.

Better add (utf8 . utf-8) to `mm-charset-synonym-alist'.

Oops, I should have read to the end before replying to Gabor.

If it becomes a more frequent mistake, we might add (utf8 . utf-8) to
the default value `mm-charset-synonym-alist'.

Mostly it was a pilot error, e.g. as discussed in
<http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.xemacs.beta/26066/focus=26089>.

Why not just do that now?  It's unlikely it will be a problem, and it's
convenient for the users.

I hesitate to pollute `mm-charset-synonym-alist' by adding entries for
each and every pilot error.

In my news spool (Usenet and lots of mailing lists from Gmane) there
are more than 65000 messages.  Only the following articles have a
bogus "utf8" charset (< 0.01%):

All from Evolution.  According to
<http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=525221> it is fixed there
now.  Not adding it in `mm-charset-synonym-alist' might help to fix
broken MUAs/NUAs.  ;-)

BTW, I seem to recall that using (define-coding-system-alias 'utf8
'utf-8) might trigger Gnus into creating charset=utf8.

I tend to agree with this.

If you follow the bug link, you'll see that even though Evolution had
two bugs on the issue, it turned out, in "my" case, to be a
configuration error, with unknown origin, that had survived many
Evolution upgrades.
