Gnus 5.7

I've now made Gnus 5.7 (that's going into the Emacs 20.4 when I wake
up tomorrow) and put it at
<URL:http://www.stud.ifi.uio.no/~larsi/gnus.tar.gz>.  Could the Emacs
20.3 users please give it a quick whirl (with Emacs 20.3) to see
whether I've made any obvious goofs?  Tanx.

(Oh; 5.7 this is just Gnus 5.6.45 with some extra bits from the FSF.)

When I get this file and gunzip it, I get a directory called
gnus-5.6.46, and gnus-version is

Gnus v5.5; nntp 5.0; nnml 1.0; nnmh 1.0; nndoc 1.0; nndraft 1.0; nnfolder 1.0

If that's what you meant, then it seems to work fine.  I don't see
anything obviously wrong, except that %f doesn't work in
gnus-summary-line-format the way it does in pgnus.

(In my .gnus file, I have

(setq gnus-summary-line-format "%U%R%z%e%I%(%[%4L: %-20,20f%]%) %s
")

and with gnus 5.5, this produces format lines like

    [  61: *                   ] [Quest] Bug List update

All authors' names appear as *.  Replacing %f with %F does more or
less the right thing.)

I'm now making a new tarball with the right number...

But this I don't understand.  The gnus-version-number in gnus.el seems 
to be 5.7 here...

The %f spec doesn't exist in 5.7, so that's ok.

Sorry, my fault, I was being silly--my load-path was wrong.  Now
gnus-version is 

  Gnus v5.7

as it should be, and everything seems to work fine.  Well, except for
things which shouldn't work (e.g., gnus-treat-display-xface has no
effect, which isn't a surprise, because the treatment stuff is all
new, right?), and things which probably shouldn't work, like the
things that pgnus puts in my .newsrc.eld that gnus 5.7 doesn't seem to
understand -- things like

  gnus-summary-from-or-to-or-newsgroups

of my list groups re-appeared as unread.  Not sure if that means
anything...

This is with XEmacs 20.3, which Gnus 5.7 might not work under.  But
anyway, I don't understand this about "keyword"...  Uhm...  Perhaps
it's the :version thing?

Other than these it compiled cleanly and so far is working as expected.

While compiling gnus-mule-get-coding-system in file /usr/local/lib/xemacs-20.3/lisp/gnus-5.7/lisp/gnus-mule.el:

While compiling gnus-mule-message-send-mail-function:

Well, compilation warnings are to be expected.  What's important is
whether it works or not.  

I've now installed Gnus 5.7 on the FSF machines, and Richard says he's 
going to make an Emacs pretest later today, so I guess we'll see
whether I messed something up pretty soon.  :-)

Yes, to pretesters.  Write to rms@gnu.org to be added to the pretester
list.  RMS is not really into this baazar thing.

XEmacs 20.3 is almost exactly the same as 20.4.  20.4 was a bugfix
release in the true sense of the word.

This is not true.  It might be that odd-numbered Gnusae are sometimes
not released outside FSF Emacs sources, but when they are, they work
with XEmacs.

For instance, Gnus 5.5 was exactly the same as Gnus 5.4.something, and
it worked in XEmacs just fine.

Wasn't it the only "feature" of odd-numberd Gnusii that XEmacs support
was removed from them?

The version bundled with FSF, of course, doesn't support XEmacs.  But
those that have been released "properly" still retained everything.
Anyway, I haven't seen Gnus 5.7, so I have no idea what's in there.

Just downloaded gnus.tar.gz and built it using make.bat (replaced 'call
%1\bin\emacs.bat' with plain 'emacs' as it is in my path). No problems except
that building the info files in texi hangs emacs as it always did (just ran
the two command in the Cygnus 20.1 bash shell and everything went fine).

Then renamed the old gnus directory to gnus-5.6, and the new gnus-5.7
directory to gnus and restarted emacs 20.3.1: simply read all this email about
gnus 5.7 and answered this one. Even reading the mail with epop3mail v 0.9.7
went great!
