this seems absurd.
I have the following setting (ma gnus 0.10, Xemacs 21.5.33)

(setq gnus-secondary-select-methods
      '(

		(nnimap "UCMgmail"
				(nnimap-address "imap.gmail.com")
				(nnimap-server-port 993)
				(nnimap-authinfo-file "~/.authinfo")
				(nnimap-stream ssl))
		(nnimap "gmail"
				(nnimap-address "imap.gmail.com")
				(nnimap-server-port 993)
				(nnimap-authinfo-file "~/.authinfo")
				(nnimap-stream ssl))
 		(nntp "news.gmane.org")))

this works with my laptop at work but at home I obtain:

Matches [ Gnus 21607 ] [1]
Warning: Unable to open server nntp+news.gmane.org due to: Opening input
file: "No data"
Checking new news...done


however I can connect to the server (via 119) using seamonkey
mail/newsreader. So the port 119 is not blocked.

So what is the problem?

The culprit was the imap server entry. I changed the password gnus could
not connect but then also failed to connect to the news server. I still
find this behavior odd but my problem is solved.
