I've sent a (personal) mail to Lars asking for his opinion on Oct 29,
but he didn't answer yet.

smtpmail.el is not part of Gnus.  If the Emacs maintainers don't
object, it's fine with me to install it now.

IIUC, the latter two are bug fixes.  So it was okay to commit them.
