gnus-version's value is "Oort Gnus v0.08"

Gnus *info* says I can delete nnslashdot groups with G DEL, but when I
try it in *Group*  on (say):

         *: nnslashdot:Email (As We Know It) Doomed?  (02/11/19/0439257) 

it complains

   This backend does not support group deletion 



Any hints?
