The earlier errors probably created that crash box, since they happened during mail splitting. I forgot to say you need to re-evaluate the new definition of `nnmail-get-new-mail-1'! You don't need to move the nnmail files anywhere, it is enough just to edit the definition of `nnmail-get-new-mail-1', then hit C-M-x while point is inside the function definition. That will be necessary to put the new definition into effect. The next time you restart Emacs the old definition will be restored.
