Thanks! But I'm too anxious to apply this advice (hacking
gnus-newsrc-alist seems dangerous to me...).
And since you don't allow me to beat you in case of breakage, I've
written my own (hopefully safe) patch ;-)

I'll send it to the list, perhaps you could integrate it into gnus.
