After writing my mail, decided to investigate again... and I think I
found the problem: The content of ~/Mail/mail/misc/.marks was this:

((read (1 . 4485) (4487 . 4507) 4509 4511 4513 4519 (4522 . 4523) 4525
4527 (4534 . 4535) 4539 4545 4551 (4553 . 4554) (4557 . 4560) (4562 .
4563) (4567 . 4568) 4570 (4572 . 4573) (4575 . 4576) 4582 4590 4593
(4596 . 4597) (4601 . 4602) (4607 . 4608) 4612 4615 4617 (4619 . 4620)
(4622 . 4623) 4629 4631 (4633 . 4634) (4638 . 4639) 4641 (4643 . 4645)
(4647 . 4650) (4653 . 4656) (4658 . 4661) 4663 (4666 . 4667) 4671
(4678 . 4681) 4683 (4685 . 4691) 4693 (4695 . 4696) 4698 (4700 . 4701)
(4459 . 4456) (4458 . 4456) (4458 . 4456) (4458 . 4456) (4458 . 4456)
(4458 . 4456) (4458 . 4456) (4458 . 4456) (4458 . 4456) (4458 . 4456)
(4458 . 4456) (4458 . 4456) (4458 . 4456) (4458 . 4456) (4458 . 4456)
(4458 . 4456) (4458 . 4456) (4458 . 4456) (4458 . 4456) (4458 . 4456)
(4458 . 4456) ... etc.

Once I removed all the (4458 . 4456) pairs, and restarted Gnus, I had
once again 139 unread messages, I did a catchup, and now the file
reads:

((read (1 . 4756)) (tick 1087 1091 1123 2355 2599 3412 3484 3498 3524
3534 3575 3590 3639 ... etc.

Much better! I think that fixed it... I'll holler again if the
problem resurfaces.

Alex.
