Even though I have set up CouchDB myself, I tend to agree: one extra server, one separate type of connection that has to work, one extra set of authentication info that has to be supplied I think relying on having an IMAP server available, for this to work, is reasonable. I think writing something as close to the metal of nnimap will boost performance. I have tried running gnus-sync with tramp as the transport mechanism, and that was slow (tramp over ssh. I never got around to try tramp over IMAP). I also think that sending the full .newsrc.eld in gzipped form is something that should be explored. My .newsrc.eld on this netbook is 780kB, which isn't big by today's network usage standards. Using "gzip --best" brings it down to 140kB, which is... nothing, really. (of course sending the entire .newsrc.eld in gzipped form would break the opportunistic streaming bit...)
