As you can see in the dist-directory you found, No Gnus 0.6 is the latest developement release, from May 1st last year. If you want the bleeding edge, check out Gnus from CVS as explained on the Gnus Distribution-page you've already located. Maybe it is not for you, you sound like you easily get confused.
