The recipe in my OP was the best I could come up with, but as I noted in a followup a few minutes ago, I am also seeing the problem in other circumstances. I suppose I can stop using gnus-unplugged for a while; if I don't experience the problem then, that would at least strongly implicate gnus-unplugged, and if I still do, then it would exonerate gnus-unplugged.
