You may want to try and make this smaller - a while after I started
using the Gnus registry (for spam.el) I noticed a considerable
slowdown due to the size of that file.
The "cure" is perhaps something like this:
(setq gnus-registry-max-entries 5000)
(my registry-file is now around 600-700 KB and quitting is quite speedy).
(I don't know about the overview-files.)
