I just upgraded to Fedora 24 and as such am now running GNU Emacs 25.0.95.1 (x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 3.20.6) of 2016-07-14. Is it the case that the gnus bundled with this version is later than the final checkout of the former git gnus which I was continuing to run under Emacs 24.whatever in Fedora 23? How can I tell for sure? /usr/share/emacs/25.0.95.1/lisp/gnus/gnus.el says version is 5.13 which seems old to me.

Thanks,

The bleeding edge says 5.13 as well:

 * http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/emacs.git/tree/lisp/gnus/gnus.el

(it probably has been on 5.13 for a long time, so for some definitions
of old, 5.13 isn't).

The last commit in the git.gnus.org repository was in February:

  commit 222b4c6c4b67356c7149473d073871c8fd5b56d8
  Author: Lars Ingebrigtsen <larsi@gnus.org>
  Date:   Sat Feb 6 15:02:00 2016 +1100

      Ma Gnus v0.16 is begun

so if GNU Emacs 25.0.95.1 has newer commits to the Gnus code than that...

  Best regards,

   Adam

The problem is finding this out. I have the same issue with the
emacs snapshots that I use for Debian: I assume that they are tracking
git development but I cannot tell for sure.

Is that complicated?

Take the first commit (or one of them) to lisp/gnus/ in the GNU Emacs
git repo after Feb 6 2016, and see if that change is included in the
version you are running or not?

What am I missing?

Can't you ask the packager, if that isn't stated in the packaging?
"-snapshot" sounds like it would be from the bleeding edge...

Yes, probably. I'll have a look. Thanks.

Unfortunately I don't get any git information from the Fedora package, at least not that I know how to find. However it just occurred to me to check /usr/share/emacs/25.0.95.1/etc/GNUS-NEWS. That clearly states it's based on No Gnus so I'll stick with my last git checkout for now.

Thanks,

Why not look at the first commit (or one of them) in the GNU Emacs git
repo to lisp/gnus/ after Feb 6 2016, and check if the corresponding
changes appear in the files in the Fedora package?

I guess it should be possible to find a change that is recognizable?

This commit seems like it should be easy to check whether it is included
in the package you have installed or not:

  commit 21fe2ebec8b63d5fd0a570ed0c907802ab83f991
  Author: Lars Ingebrigtsen <larsi@gnus.org>
  Date:   Wed Feb 24 03:04:03 2016

      Move low-level library files from the lisp/gnus directory

      The files moved from lisp/gnus are:

      auth-source.el -> /
      compface.el -> /image
      ecomplete.el -> /
      flow-fill.el -> /mail
      gravatar.el -> /image
      gssapi.el -> /net
      html2text.el -> /net
      ietf-drums.el -> /mail
      mail-parse.el -> /mail
      mail-prsvr.el -> /mail
      mailcap.el -> /net
      plstore.el -> /
      pop3.el -> /net
      qp.el -> /mail
      registry.el -> /
      rfc1843.el -> /international
      rfc2045.el -> /mail
      rfc2047.el -> /mail
      rfc2231.el -> /mail
      rtree.el -> /
      sieve-manage.el -> /net
      sieve-mode.el -> /net
      sieve.el -> /net
      starttls.el -> /net
      utf7.el -> /international
      yenc.el -> /mail

Perhaps?

Another one might be:

  commit 66d9ef95c0f9407d2a6d26bcd7ed84a303294b53
  Author: Lars Ingebrigtsen <larsi@gnus.org>
  Date:   Sun Feb 14 07:07:48 2016

      Remove compat code for older Emacsen

      * lisp/gnus/gnus-art.el (gnus-button-url-regexp): Remove
      XEmacs compat code.

      * lisp/gnus/gnus-sync.el (gnus-sync-json-alist-p): Remove
      unused compat function.
      (gnus-sync-json-plist-p): Ditto.

      * lisp/gnus/message.el (message-default-charset): Make obsolete.
      (message-info): Remove compat code.
      (message-setup-fill-variables): Remove kludge needed earlier
      to not overwrite `normal-auto-fill-function'.
      (message-split-line): Remove compat code.

      * lisp/gnus/mm-view.el (mm-display-inline-fontify): Remove

Or maybe:

  commit a0e3180db181d1bc7ccb883f8f2b55e76a3703f2
  Author: Lars Ingebrigtsen <larsi@gnus.org>
  Date:   Tue Feb 9 23:53:13 2016

      Remove some Gnus compat functions

      * lisp/gnus/gnus-ems.el (gnus-string-mark-left-to-right)
      (gnus-window-inside-pixel-edges, gnus-set-process-plist)
      (gnus-process-plist, gnus-process-get, gnus-process-put): Remove.

I'm just thinking out loud here...

Or just check if lisp/gnus/gnus-ems.el exists (removed in 14369a9 on Feb
10, 2016).

Still there - thanks for that idea. And as I noted earlier, I'm inclined to believe the included GNUS-NEWS that Fedora's package includes the released version of No Gnus. I'll stick with Ma until Fedora includes something newer. Fortunately for my uses I'm not missing any functionality.

Hi, just my story~

Before i used Emacs 23 on Ubuntu 12.04.
One problem was that could not connect to imap.gmail.com on Emacs 23.

BTW, i can now connect imap.gmail.com after i did upgrade Emacs to
the latest snapshot. It is good to me with Emacs snapshot (25.x)

Still i am in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Crouton on Chromebook).

Thanks,
