Ever since I've started using GNUs for my email, I've been
accumulating text files in my "/home/boudiccas/Mail" directory. They
have odd names like "Incoming4414ruc" or "Incoming4414rsy", or such
like.

They seem to be generated every time I manually get my email from
"/var/mail/boudiccas", and consist of emails from root, such as this
one -

The "boudiccas@london" account does not exist, its just my user-name
and the machine-name.

How can I
- A - get rid of them,
- B - Stop them from being accumulated, and/or generated?

Like any other file on your computer.

Basically a safety precaution.

I think the default is t in non-development versions of Gnus.

May I ask how to insert citations in that style into a message buffer? I
have been wondering about that before since it pops up on this list
rather frequently. So far I only know about message-mark-inserted-region
which generally suits my purposes very well but I'm still curious to
learn about „that other way“.

Not sure about that particular style (might be a vim user), but in Emacs
you can use e.g. rebox2.el with the following templates:

It's because you're running git gnus.

As Adam said, they are there to avoid a development gnus from losing
mail.

(I have been using CVS gnus and then later git gnus, since 1997, and I
currently avoid these files by not using a local file system backend for
mail.  I use nnimap.)

I'm running nnimap for my gmails, how do you run it for a pop3
account please?

And these dratted files are still accumulating so I think that I'll
write a bash script to auto-delete them. Run from a cron job, set it
and forget it!

Its quite easy Elias, write what you want to be outlined, then
highlight it with the mouse and do "M-x boxquote-region".

That is from boxquote.  Cf: http://www.davep.org/emacs/boxquote.el

On Gentoo, it is app-emacs/boxquote.  On Debian, Ubuntu, et alia it is
part of the emacs-goodies-el package.

The functions include boxquote-describe-function, boxquote-describe-key
boxquote-describe-variable, boxquote-shell-command, boxquote-region and
several more.

If that is the case, then someone did something wrong when packaging it,
or you have the setting in your config.

Do 
 M-x locate-library RET gnus RET
to find out what gnus you're actually running.

This gives me "Library is file
/usr/local/share/emacs/24.3.91/lisp/gnus/gnus.elc" which doesn't
really help, however "M-x gnus-version" gives "Gnus v5.13".

It tells me that you are actually using the gnus that comes with emacs
24.3.91.

What will help you, is this, from Adam's message:
 C-h v mail-source-delete-incoming RET

In the help buffer, move the cursor to "customize" and press the RETURN
key, in the customize buffer, open the "Value Menu" and choose
"Immediately".

Then click on the "Apply" button, and then the "Apply and Save" button,
then type 'q' (without the single quotes) twice to get rid of the
customize and help buffers.

What I've done for my own POP3 accounts, is to fetchmail them to my own
IMAP server, and filter them into separate folders there, based on the
recipient.

Thanks for this, but your method wouldn't work here, on a
stand-alone machine, no network, and one sole user, and no-one else
living here. ATM I couldn't justify to myself setting up a box to
act as a server just for handling 3 pop accounts. But it is
something that I could bear in mind for the future, so thanks again.

Bear in mind that the "server" in this case, could be the machine the
client is run on.

At least if the client machine is a linux or *BSD computer.

Eg. if it's a debian/ubuntu/mint/etc. system:
 apt-get install dovecot fetchmail
and take it from there.
