Hi,
I'm pretty sure this has been asked trillions of times, but I am not
able to find any post with this information. In the info page I can not
find it either.
The question is very simple: is there any variable to prevent gnus from
doing a get-new-news at start?

You can give the `gnus' command a numerical argument to tell it not to
open any groups below that number. Also check out `gnus-no-server',
which might serve the same purpose...
