Nobody has modified Gnus to do so.  The "unread mail" count in Gnus is
(and has been for a long time) an estimate based on some internal
computations in Gnus.  There is currently no backend interface to ask
nnimap to provide to correct value.  Perhaps it should be added,
patches welcome...
