I've just rebuilt emacs with that (though note it's spelled "scroll-bars", not "scrollbars") --with-x-toolkit=gtk --without-toolkit-scroll-bars and do appreciate the fidelity of the resulting X scrollbars, but if I stick with this, I'll have to get used to the different way the scrollbar responds to left and middle-mouse operations (or maybe configure to suit). Another drawback of the X scrollbars: needs to have its color configured to be as unobtrusive as the gtk one.
