Dear Gnusers,

Being new to Gnus I have quite an unpleasant experience with nntp. Almost every
time I enter the group Gnus fetches all the archive file (around 60MB in case of
my list). This does not depend on the number of unread articles in the
newsgroup.

I am using gmane news to mail service in case it is of any important.

Thank you for any suggestion,
Vitaly.

I am such a dufus. It was the variable gnus-fetch-old-headers, set to 'some, causing the
fetching of the whole archive. It was also mentioned in the doc that it does not
work with gmane. Now, once it's nil, everything is faster than
lightning.

Vitaly.

Is there anyone actually using gnus-fetch-old-headers? The one-time
effect is available with `C-u 1000 RET for example to get the last 1000
articles. Is it useful in other ways?

Thanks
Ted

It's useful in conjunction with the settings that display read articles
and stuff. And if you're on a fast line close to the NNTP server. :-)
