Isn't that similar to entering random URLs in your web browser to find interesting sites? USENET doesn't work well like that. I would suggest running through groups you don't follow closely every week or two with your fingers on C-k, stopping on threads that interest you. If looking through thousands of messages is your thing, take heart; debian-user can easily provide 1000-1500 per week.
