WARNING WARNING!!!

I've just tried receiving new mail with Pterodactyl 0.85, and it
didn't work out. The mail is saved to the appropriate (nnml) files,
but I don't see it in my summaries. I'll try to regenerate NOV
databases now.

Curious. I picked p0.85 as soon as it was announced, and have been
getting mail with it via a "((file))" setting without incident.
Overviews are sane; summaries are consistent.

I didn't have any problems with picking up mail either, from qmail
Maildir into nnml groups.

I've now checked it again in a more limited environment, in case it's
a spur-of-the-moment thing. But no; pgnus-0.85 still doesn't get mail
for me.

What happens is that the mail gets saved to the appropriate group, but
the .overview file and active file don't get updated, which results in
new mail being virtually invisible from Gnus. Regenerating the nov
database fixes the problem.

I don't know what causes the problem. It might be something specific
to my environment, but it is at least repeatable. I've now reverted
to 0.84.

Well, it happens to me as well. I didn't try 0.85, but 0.87 loses
mail. At least .overview files are not updated.

Had to downgrade to 0.84 and do a M-x nnml-generate-nov-databases to
make new mail appear.

Using linux (rh6) and emacs 20.3.1.

What is your and Hrvoje's nnmail-spool-file and mail-sources
variables?

nnmail-spool-file's value is
((file)
(pop :server "post.venstre.no" :user "jorgenw" :password "xx"))

mail-sources's value is
nil

`nnmail-spool-file' is a variable declared in Lisp.
      -- loaded from "nnmail"

    Value: ("/var/spool/mail/hniksic" "~/Mail/incoming")

`mail-sources' is a variable declared in Lisp.
      -- loaded from "mail-source"

    Value: nil

Is this not right?

Ok; I can now guess what's going on.

In nnmail-get-new-mail there's a clause

;; If we did indeed read any incoming spools, we save all info.
      (unless (zerop new)
        ....

I'm guessing that `new' is zero, so the info isn't saved. But why is
`new' zero? Can you edebug through that function, see which of the
...

Stop press!

It should check `total' and not `new'. Fix in Pterodactyl Gnus v0.88.
