I don't think it can but I'm sure somebody will correct me if I am
wrong. If it cannot, it's not gnus's fault; I believe that google
doesn't support nttp access to its groups.

in any case, have you checked out any of the free news servers out
there? I use nntp.aioe.org which is fine for low volume contributions
(I think they impose some reasonable limits). I'm offline so I cannot
check to see if comp.lang.forth is there but I cannot see why it
wouldn't be as many other groups in the comp.lang.* hierarchy are
present.

HTH,
eric

Right. It's intentionally inaccessible, like the vast majority of web
forums.

news.eternal-september.org is the typical recomendation of late for cost-free
r/w usenet access.

http://eternal-september.org/ has the details on how to sign up for an account.

They even support starttls on ports 119 and 80, and nntps on ports 563 and 443.

Actually, using the old google groups web interface there was a very
nice UI where you could subscribe to groups and receive all the new
mails in your inbox. You could even subscribe to receive the mails in an
address other than your @gmail.com one.

In order to get them fancy-split, I'm still using this rule here:

("list-id" ".*<\\(.+\\)\\.googlegroups\\.com>.*" "mail.gg.\\1")

That's the method I used to subscribe to some google groups, however I
remember some difficulty on how to subscribe by mail to groups using
there new UI blabla.
