Pieter,
I'm sorry you're having such a time with this, and I'm sorry I can't be of
more help. It sounds very much like gnus-read-active-file is the heart of
the problem.
One other thing I have seen recently with pgnus. I made some changes to my
.gnus but they did not take effect until I manually deleted .gnus.elc and
byte-compiled the new .gnus. I don't know if that has anything to do with
your situation.
