I've decided that this is a bug in Cyrus, but with a simple workaround
in gnus.  

The following fails:

X UID SEARCH  TEXT "test"

The following succeeds:

X UID SEARCH TEXT "test"

Note the one space difference.  Here is a workaround patch:
