Looks like an XEmacs issue to me.

Reply-to set to xemacs-beta and mike.kupfer; no point in bugging
ding with a thread on XEmacs problems that seem to occur before Gnus
ever gets loaded.  We'll come back if there seem to be Gnus issues.

I don't see this, also on 21.4.18, gnus 5.10.7, but XEmacs package
1.85.  I'll upgrade when I get a chance and try again.

Do you know what's going on here?  Is this all from your init file
from "Loading executable" up to here?

IIRC this may indicate a problem with the menu code.  I don't think
this would affect the gnus-splash-face which should be defface'd when
Gnus is loaded, though.  Still it may be worth chasing these down.
