Given the configurability of Gnus, I think the utility of defaulting
to a commonly installed program (xv) far outweighs any aesthetic value
you might gain by defaulting to a free alternative, and would like to
see this change backed out. It doesn't help that Electric Eyes uses
the same executable name as the text editor "easy editor." (The text
editor appears to be the only ee at the site where I publically
install recent Gnus versions.)

I'm sure that RMS thinks otherwise about it, and I doubt that he
allows Gnus to be included in Emacs if some part of it defaults to
using non-free software. Just my two cents.

He hasn't commented on xv as the default in Gnus. I just wanted to
change it to ee.

What's wrong with it defaulting to `display' (ImageMagick)? Doesn't
ee require Gnome to run?

Nothing; so I'll change the defaults from ee to display.

OK, that's much more reasonable; I'd still prefer xv, but won't object
to either display or xloadimage (which I suspect is a bit more common,
though I don't have accounts enough places to verify that claim by
myself :-))

display cooperates better with older virtual window managers and produces
*massively* better picture quality on my Creator 3D Sun machine (to the
point where I can barely stand to use xv). display is also *very*
actively developed, whereas xv seems to be mostly dead unless I'm just not
looking in the right places.

Sounds like you are using xv with a display mode that is different from
that of your X server. That is, xv in 24-bit mode on an 8-bit server, or
vice-versa. I've used xv for years on 8-bit, 16-bit, and 24-bit X servers
and it works just fine on all of them *if* you use the correct settings.

xv is currently stagnant. But then, there is little that really needs to
be added to it that has not already been done. It handles all of the
common image formats (with readilly available patches for modern TIFF and
PNG), and most of the uncommon ones.

No. It depends on the GLIB, GTK and Imlib libraries.
