That is how Gnus usually works. When you have the group open, you can type / o to get prompted for how many old messages you want to have displayed (added to the view). In the *Summary* buffer you can use C-u SPACE or C-u RET to enter a group, then you get prompted for how many messages to show, instead of just the unread ones.
