But the .newsrc.eld file is the only file that records which NNTP groups have been read. That's why I suggested to port the .marks code to nntp.el; then you would have a file for each NNTP server which records only which articles have been read on that NNTP server. That file could then be synced. Then you'd sync nothing for the nnimap part (all state is kept on the server, except for the list of groups you subscribe to -- but that doesn't change so often), and the single file for the nntp part.
