Found what happened. Somehow the default value of

  gnus-article-x-face-command

went from

 'gnus-xmas-article-display-xface

to

 "{ echo '/* Width=48, Height=48 */'; uncompface; } | icontopbm | xv -quit -"

which I would guess is the appropriate default for Emacs, not XEmacs.
