This output is after I've returned to my original bit of code.
So may not be all that helpful, but something is not allowing my user
to see new mail, or much of old mail.

gnus-select-method is a variable defined in `gnus.el'.
Its value is (nntp "news.gmane.org")
Original value was (nntp "news")
