The PERMANENTFLAGS response says exactly which ones are supported: http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3501#section-7.1 If the PERMANENTFLAGS response contains \* then the server is able to persist non-standard flags. Ie. flags not listed in section 2.3.2 or its own FLAGS response, and flags that may just have meaning to gnus and no other IMAP clients.
