Subject: large NOV files

Many of my newsgroups have large NOV files, e.g.:
/home/steve/.emacs.d/News/agent/nntp/news.gmane.org/gmane/linux/suse/opensuse/user:
total used in directory 33408 available 6766464
drwxr-xr-x 2 steve users 4096 2009-03-30 10:47 .
drwxr-xr-x 8 steve users 4096 2009-03-30 10:47 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 steve users 711586 2009-03-29 17:15 .agentview
-rw-r--r-- 1 steve users 33445034 2009-03-29 17:15 .overview
In these groups only a fairly small number of articles are ticked, so I
can see them immediately. I have the impression that the size of the
NOV file slows down the response of Gnus in these groups, but I have
found no way to reduce its size and keep the ticks. If I delete the NOV
file, the ticked articles disappear. Using either
gnus-cache-generate-nov-databases or nnml-generate-nov-databases does
not reduce the size of the NOV files. Is there any way to do this and
keep the ticked articles?
This with Gnus from GNU Emacs 23.0.91.4 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version
2.14.4) of 2009-03-15 on escher.
