Neither
	(setq debug-on-signal t)
nor
	(setq nnimap-debug t)
made any changes in the behaviour.  I still get the split screen and
the beep, and I don't enter any debugger.

FWIW The Netscape 4.77 IMAP mail client has no problems reading these
folders. 

Could it be something related to UIDVALIDITY?
