Interesting.  Thanks 

    1. With the low-color option auto-smiley displays smileys (but not
       all of them) in the message and the article buffers.

    2. With the emoji option, auto-smiley does not display any smiley,
       gnus, however does display most of the smiley in the article
       buffer but none in the message buffer.

Hm strange that is
