Pretty basic, I think:

(setq gnus-select-method '(nntp "news.gmane.org"))
(setq gnus-secondary-select-methods 
      '((nnfolder "private")))

Plus a number of hooks for displaying, sorting, highlighting, etc.

FWIW, my ~/Mail/active file contains 69 group entries.
